Portion? It's important for us

On food labels, we are usually used to read nutrition facts for 100 grams, but we actually eat a different quantity of that product. In our evaluation we consider the serving size that is reported on the label and, when missing, we assign a standard one according to the product type.

Nutrients are not all equals

Even though all nutrients are important for the health level of our organism, there are substances that are usually considered positive for our well-being (such as vitamins or mineral salts) and whose intake we encourage. But there are also other nutrients (such as saturated fats or sugars) that we have to intake without exceeding. This principles form an important base for our algorithm.

Rating is a compatibility index

From a nutritional point of view, each of us has his own needs that are different from others. “What is healthy for me may not be healthy for you”. For a correct nutrition it's important to consider this factor and that's why we take into account personal peculiarities: in this way we can provide tailor-made results.

You are at the centre of our “universe”

Our starting point are nutrition needs, that is the daily intake of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and energy that we have to take during the day in order to preserve a good health state. These values are defined by national institutions and they consider specific characteristics of human beings (age, gender, height, weight…). We use those data as the base for understanding how much a single product impact in our diet.

We don't like “sly labels”

We negatively consider packages that force us to eat more than one serving size, but also captions that are too generic or not very informative. They can hide characteristics of the product of which the consumer should be aware. Our goal is to push producers in being clearer and more transparent.

Additives and ingredients, let's keep eyes opened

There are always new studies that make us better understand what is inside food we eat every day. We carefully follow what happens in the world of nutrition, especially statements by influential institutions and we also restructure our evaluation algorithm according the most recent scientific achievements.

FAQs

How Edo works and which are the guidelines behind the evaluation algorithm?

What is the number that I can see linked to each product?

It's an indicator, an easy and synthetic compatibility index. This rating allows you to understand how a certain food suits to your physiological condition, that changes from person to person and that is influenced by many factors (first of all gender and age). Ratings are placed in a range from 0 to 10: an Edo index equals to zero means that the product is not compatible to your condition and that you should reduce its consume as much as you can. Instead, the more the Edo index is near to 10, the more the compatibility increases. Our index synthesizes all information that we can find on food labels and makes them clearer. In this way you can choose what to buy with more attention and consciousness.

How do we calculate Edo index?

The Edo index is the result of the combined evaluation of nutrition facts and ingredients which characterize a product. Nutritional data are evaluated in relation to our daily needs, while as regards ingredients we consider the characteristics of their composition and the most recent studies about the effects on the human body and health. Same applies for additives. In the calculation of the rating we take into account also the portion of that particular food. Usually we receive information about a product related to 100 grams, but considering the portion we get closer to what we can realistically eat. Portions can be declared on the label, otherwise we choose a standard one in accordance with the directions of SINU (Italian Society of Human Nutrition).

Which products can I find in Edo?

Potentially all those who we usually find in the supermarket shelves. So all products whose label display a unique identification code (EAN), nutrition facts and ingredients. Edo's database includes the greatest part of the products you can currently buy in the UK. And if you don't find a product in the app, you can sens us pictures of the product through the app itself: our team will enter alle the data in our systems and you will be noticed as soon as we can with a push notification once we elaborated the resuts.

I'm celiac, how can Edo help me?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that is rapidly spreading in the world population. Today much is known of this disease and deal with it is not as problematic as it once was. But, like all consumers, even for people with celiac disease there isn't an appropriate tool to assist in the daily choice of food. The goal of Edo is just that: to be a useful tool to consciously choose what to eat. On each screen about a product, in addition to the rating, there is also a badge that is usually colored gray and it turns to green when the product is declared gluten free by the manufacturer.

Edo's idea is innovative and very important in order to let consumer make targeted and conscious choices. In a fast and easy way. Food education is the proper tool to win the fight against overweight, obesity and all related diseases.
